Course Description:

Chemistry provides students with an opportunity to continue developing scientific process skills.  It allows the student to develop concepts in life science, physical science and critical thinking through observation and experimentation.  At the completion of this course, students should have a fundamental understanding of the basic chemistry concepts associated with the structure, form, changes and uses mater and energy.   This course will challenge students to read daily, write about what they read, and research important contributions of chemists and other scientists and issues from current journals that are deemed relevant to today’s society.

This course is taught using the Alabama State Course of StudyMacon County Pacing Guide and A+ College Ready curriculum.  The textbook for this class is ChemistryMcGraw Hill  Students we will also work to improve comprehension skills,  critical thinking skills, and improve students’ achievement scores on college entrance exams.

Course Objective:  The objective of General Chemistry is to gain an understanding of basic chemistry concepts covered in the objectives listed in the Alabama Course of Study associated with the structure, form, changes and uses of mater and energy.

Course Topics:

The course will cover the following topics:

  1.  Process skills
  2. Lab & classroom safety
  3. Matter
  4. Use the periodic table to identify periodic trends
  5. Describe solubility in terms of energy changes associated with the solution process.
  6. Use the kinetic theory to explain states of matter, phase changes, solubility, and chemical reactions.
  7. Solve stoichiometric problems involving relationships among the number of particles, moles, and masses of reactants and products in a chemical reaction.
  8. Explain the behavior of ideal gases in terms of pressure, volume, temperature, and number of particles using Charles's law, Boyle's law, Gay-Lussac's law, the combined gas law, and the ideal gas law.
  9. Distinguish among endothermic and exothermic physical and chemical changes.
  10.  Describe the structure of carbon chains, branched chains, and rings.
  11.  Distinguish between chemical and nuclear reactions.

  4. Art supplies (colored pencils, markers, crayon, index cards, etc.)
  5. Scientific Calculator

Attendance/Late or Missing Assignments:

Students are to adhere to Macon County Board of Education attendance/make-up policies. This class will be fast-paced, so it is imperative that students attend class everyday! If a student missed one day, it is like missing 2 because of the block schedule. It is the student’s responsibility to make-up missed assignments.  Late assignments will only be awarded partial points unless an excuse is provides.  Students will not be allowed to make-up work for unexcused absentees and unexcused tardy.

Classroom Rules of Conduct

  1.  Always respond respectfully to adults and classmates.
  2. Absolutely no cell phone usage without permission!  All cell phones must be turned off and placed in backpacks or purses.
  3. No eating or drinking is allowed unless I give my permission.
  4. Bring all materials to class EVERYDAY/Never be tardy!
  5. You will only be able to leave class if there is a school function or if there is an emergency.  Enter the classroom, obtain permission, scan the login card and go directly to the bathroom and return to class.
  6. Never go behind my desk or take something off of my desk without my permission.
  7. Always clean your seating area before class and before you leave class.
  8. Remove all trash and make sure that your area is clean.
  9. The bell does dismiss this class.  Please remain seated until you are dismissed.
  10. You must complete your homework daily.

Discipline

  1. Verbal warning
  2. Detention
  3. Parent-teacher conference
  4. Discipline Referral

Cooperation: I expect full cooperation at all timesJ

I ask that all students follow all classroom rules: among the most important are bringing all materials to class everyday, always completing homework assignments, and never using a cell phone during class unless completing class assignments (Important note: I will follow the Macon County Board policy).   Our students need to be in a structured learning environment and they can’t have that if students are disruptive or are forgetful of their materials. I want to try and help each student, but I can’t without everyone’s cooperation. If a student fails to cooperate, I will give verbal warnings first, I will contact parents second, I will schedule conferences with parents third, and if all that does not work—I will request that further action is taken against the student. I am hopeful that it will not get to that point. Please sign that you understand and accept the rules and consequences of my classroom.
