 Workforce Development Program

August 06, 2013
Today was filled with excitement and feelings of accomplishment. Students in Macon County from both Notasulga High School and Booker T. Washington High School have something to celebrate. We have enrolled 16 students in our WIA (Workforce Improvement Act) Program as of August 6, 2013. We started this journey in February 2013, talking to parents and students, sending letters to homes, mass calling over 3,000 homes, collecting data via interest surveys, and making home visits. Throughout the process 50 plus students were taken to Montgomery, AL to the Montgomery Job Center for additional screening and eligibility determination.

This program has been in operation all summer providing meaningful job related skills and services to students. We took this day to celebrate these students and their parents for the work and support they have given the WIA Staff during this process. To do this we had an informal lunch catered by Chappys' Deli in Auburn, AL. We had over 25 guest to share in this heart-warming event. All staff expressed themselves, parents, and mostly the students. We had students from our dual enrollment program come to share their summer experiences. Many of these students were unable to participate during the summer because they were taking classes at Trenholm State Technical College all day at least twice a week.

At this point, our goals are to continue with recruitment and development through-out the maturity of this grant and to begin the new academic year with greater focus and student enrollment . Additionally, we seek to expand the program in terms of program offerings and service plans. In short, today was a day for the students to share with the WIA Staff, Parents, Career Center Personnel, and Friends why they chose to participate in the program and what life choices they have made based on their training and development.

Let's keep making WIA work for the Macon County Public School System. The students need the service and the community deserves the outcomes. Please contact the Career and Technical Education Center to get your son/daughter signed up. Our staff is here for you, 334.724.1236 or

We have been SECME-TIZED!

August 06, 2013

#1 Team from Alabama to Ever Compete in SECME Nationals

We have been SECME-TIZED!  SECME (Southeastern Consortium of Minorities in Engineering) is a national strategic alliance to renew and strengthen the professional capacity of K-12 educators, motivate and mentor students, and empower parents so that all students can learn and achieve at higher levels. This past April students from Tuskegee Institute Middle School, To’Maz Pritchett, Lee Richardson, Sergio Royster, Jarquavious Slaughter and Columbus Williams, Jr., competed in the Regional SECME Mousetrap Car Competition on the campus of Tuskegee University and won. The students competed with students from the following counties; Montgomery, Bullock, Dallas and the East Metro Atlanta area. The judges were impressed with the technical report and willingness to design a more efficient car on the spot. This summer, three of Macon County’s finest; To’Maz Pritchett, Sergio Royster and Columbus Williams, Jr., traveled and participated in the 37th Annual Summer Institute National Mousetrap Car and Robotics competition held in Daytona Beach, Florida. The students gained more knowledge on how to improve the mousetrap car design and networked with students from Georgia, Florida, Texas and the Bahamas. Our students were voted “Most Popular” by their peers. Job well done and we look forward to seeing them compete next year in the robotics competition!  Kudos to Ms Belinda Hart, Science Teacher at TIMS and Mrs. Rosemary Wright, TIMS Principal!

Career Tech Summer Program

July 25, 2013

Students in the Macon County Public School System took great effort and pride in attending the WIA - Workforce Development Improvement Act 2013 Summer Program. Students had the opportunity to participate in a series of prudent topics/sessions: Drop By Drop, Harassment Is, EverFI Financial Literacy, Safety Orientation, Career Counseling, Workplace Violence, and Math and Reading Tutorials.

These students reported to the Career and Technical Education Center daily with their minds made up as to what they want out of life. Their goals are to complete the program, graduate from high school, and enter college and/or the workforce. We (Mrs. Ronita Abney, Mrs. Marilyn Renfore, Mrs. Juan Macon, Mrs Cynthia Brown,

Mr. Christopher Clark, Mr. William Turner, and Mr. Tracy Stacy) have enjoyed working with the students. The lessons learned and time spent have no limits, we really enjoyed each of you this summer and look forward to your return.

The program is projected to continue for the 2013-2014 academic year. We continue to encourage students and parents to sign up for participation. The curriculum is phenomenal and the exposure is invaluable. Again, the program is open any student in the Macon County Public School System ages 16-21. If the student is a recent graduate and has not exceeded the age of 21 they are eligible. For program information, please contact:
