Spearheaded by Dr. Elaine Harrington, a group of Macon County School System Students are traveling to Washington D. C. to attend the Inauguration Ceremony of President Barack Obama. Although the trip was intended for seniors (who are first-time voters), Shakayla Washington, a second grade student at Deborah Cannon Wolfe in Shorter, Al, was invited to travel to the Inauguration as well. Ms Washington wrote a letter to President Obama. To her surprise, President Obama responded to Ms Washington's letter!

Social business is a cause-driven business. In a social business, the investors/owners can gradually recoup the money invested, but cannot take any dividend beyond that point. The purpose of the investment is purely to achieve one or more social objectives through the operation of the company; no personal gain is desired by the investors. The company must cover all costs, make a profit, and at the same time achieve a social objective, such as, healthcare for the poor, housing for the poor, financial services for the poor, nutrition for malnourished children, providing safe drinking water, introducing renewable energy, etc.
Professor Muhammad Yunus is a winner of the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize. He is known as the father of the Microcredit Concept and the "Banker to the Poor." His work has centered upon helping communities identify their problems and raising resources to resolve those problems.
Professor Yunus is coming to the Macon County School System this January.
Professor Yunus is requesting that we solicit teams of students, in grades 9 through 12, through classes or school groups to identify a social problem or ill in the community and generate a plausible solution to it. The team rules are attached and are also extended to faculty and administration.

Can you imagine a Christmas without turkey or presents under the tree? For many families in Macon County, this is a very real possibility, especially during these tough economic times. This Christmas, the Holiday Sharing activity was coordinated by Mrs. Terri Holcey, District Parent and Homeless Coordinator, with support from Dr. Vernesia McClaney, Ms Lakendra Mitchell, Mrs. Monica Rogers, Mr. Alden Patterson and Mr. Antonio Hamilton.
This year, the Holiday Sharing Program partnered with the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Beta Xi Omega Chapter and Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church, Rev. John Curry, Pastor.
The Macon County School System Central Office, the Transportation Dept, the Career Technical Education Dept. and several schools, including Booker T. Washington High School, Deborah Cannon Wolfe Elementary, George Washington Carver Elementary, Tuskegee Public Elementary and Tuskegee Institute Middle School all made donations to help families in Macon County this Christmas Holiday.
Students, Educators, Support Staff, and Administrators at the Career and Technical Education Complex in Macon County Public School System all paused for a Moment of Silence. Connecticut Governor Dannel P. Mallory has signed a proclamation declaring Friday;December 21, 2012 a "Day of Mourning" in recognition of their recent school shooting.
In honor and respect towards the lives lost, families affected, and careers never chosen we pay homage. Students were encouraged to understand the term Tolerance, and how it should be interpreted in situation of discomfort and dysfunction. All were further encouraged to demonstrate greater levels of understanding and compassion towards individuals who display a need for comfort during this Holiday Season.
In closing, students were told that they are valued, cherished, and mostly appreciated for who they are, and the impact that their lives will make on society. Mrs. Verdell Brown, Mrs. Cynthia Brown, Mr. William Turner, Mr. Tracy Stacy, Mr. Christopher Clark, Mr. Jimmy Thomas, and Dr. Melvin Lowe, III were all inter-mingled with the students with crossed hands during this observation. At the conclusion of the moment of silence, all recited the American Pledge of Allegiance. This was our way of paying respect to the families of victims in Connecticut.
The Deborah Cannon Wolfe students pictured below participated with the 4H program. Daniel Bettis won First Place and a check for $30.00! Congratulations 4-H Students!
On December 18, 2012 the Career and Technical Education Programs' Division celebrated one cause; Collaboration. In attendance were Career Tech Teachers from all of our secondary schools, Support Staff, and Representative Pebblin Warren. All were present and excited to celebrate our working together as we move Career and Technical Education in Macon County to greater heights.
Rep. Warren spoke towards Career Development, Workforce Readiness, and Job Embedded Teaching and Learning Skills to include College Readiness. All were well addressed topics which reflect on the lives of many of our CT Staff who hold first and second careers based on their multiple skills readiness/academic credentials. This is exactly what we challenge our students to achievement; skills which lead to professional employment. The delicious menu was provided by our School Nutrition Program - Tuskegee Institute Middle Schools which is an extension career choice from our Family and Consumer Science Programs.
Dr. Lowe gave a program overview of his expectations for the department since his appointment as Education Coordinator on last summer. "We must re-educate the community that Vocational Education is now Career Tech. These are NEW Jobs leading to Stable and Equitable Careers for ALL People. This is no longer an isolated choice for job training and employment. It is now a open option for everyone, not just minorities and rural communities".
As we fellow shipped with each other, we also remember those who are no longer with us. We will never forget the reason for the season. Love, Hope, Joy, and Peace and how it should be shared constantly and without ceasing. This is what we expect of ourselves and others, in short we expect it of our students. Again, on behalf of the entire department we extend you Holiday Greetings.
