On October 13, 2012, the Tuskegee University National Center for Bioethics in Research and Health Care in partnership with Tuskegee University Library Services & Archives and the Tuskegee University History & Political Science Department offered the first TU Teacher’s Academy. The TU Teacher’s Academy was a pilot professional development workshop to engage Macon County Public School Teachers, K-12, in the exploration of historical events that still prove relevant in 2012. Several Macon County educators in the areas of American history, government, literature, art, music and other related subjects in the humanities gathered to attend the one-day academy. Participants included Charma Allen, Kimela Coleman, Gwendolyn Collier and Stephen Rogers.
The academy was facilitated by a multi-disciplinary team from the university and focused on guiding the participants through Archival documents, dating back to the mid 1900’s. The group researched the history of the Tuskegee Civic Association (1941-1979). The TCA was an important community effort that impacted the Civil Rights Movement and had particular significance leading up to the historical landmark Supreme Court case of Gomillion vs. Lightfoot. The group journeyed through history by delving into boxes that included authentic articles, pictures and announcements from the aforementioned period. The teacher’s were divided into three groups – Student movements, Race relations and the Socio-economic times of African Americans in Southern states. Each group presented a Power Point presentation on their individual finds. The day ended with a conversation of how they would translate this lesson into an informative learning experience for their students.
PRESS RELEASE

The City of Tuskegee

DATE: October 21, 2012
First of all I want to thank the Montgomery Advertiser for bringing to the forefront, in an article that Headlined the Sunday, October 21st paper, the facts, given in detail, that point to the almost certain likelihood that Poarch Creek Indian funds were used in the battle against the electronic bingo bill. This is what we in Tuskegee/Macon County have been saying all the time. As the former legislator who introduced, and passed the bingo legislation, I have been fighting this battle for years, most of the time alone, and struggling to get not only the Advertiser, but the rest of the press as well to cover this issue. Ironically it was, in part, to discuss this issue that we had already called for a town rally on, and march around, the Tuskegee City Square on Wednesday, October 24th, at 4:30 p.m. In addition, the rally has been called to provide an opportunity for Tuskegee/Macon County citizens to make another resounding outcry, in a very public way, that we want VictoryLand, the gaming facility for which we voted, and which brought crucial jobs and revenue to all aspects of our community, to be reopened immediately, We will brief our Macon County Democratic Leadership at the regular 6:00 p.m. meeting of the Macon County Democratic Conference, Monday, the 22nd, at the Macon County Courthouse Annex, on our plans for the rally, and ask for their input.
Following the rally and march on the square on Wednesday, the 24th, we will meet with citizens in the Macon County Courthouse, at 5:00 p.m. to continue the discussion on our support of the effort to re-open VictoryLand, as well as to discuss other important issues specific to the Tuskegee community. As Mayor-Elect of Tuskegee it is important to have the thoughts and ideas of the citizens with regard to county-wide and city issues as we develop our strategy to move Tuskegee forward.
