Social Business Competition

January 04, 2013

Social business is a cause-driven business. In a social business, the investors/owners can gradually recoup the money invested, but cannot take any dividend beyond that point. The purpose of the investment is purely to achieve one or more social objectives through the operation of the company; no personal gain is desired by the investors. The company must cover all costs, make a profit, and at the same time achieve a social objective, such as, healthcare for the poor, housing for the poor, financial services for the poor, nutrition for malnourished children, providing safe drinking water, introducing renewable energy, etc.

Professor Muhammad Yunus is a winner of the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize.  He is known as the father of the Microcredit Concept and the "Banker to the Poor."  His work has centered upon helping communities identify their problems and raising resources to resolve those problems.

Professor Yunus is coming to the Macon County School System this January.

Professor Yunus is requesting that we solicit teams of students, in grades 9 through 12, through classes or school groups to identify a social problem or ill in the community and generate a plausible solution to it. The team rules are attached and are also extended to faculty and administration.

Non-Violence Training

December 17, 2012

Dr. Bernard LaFayette will be in the district tomorrow for an Orientation to Non-Violence Training.  In light of the 20 innocent lives that were lost in a school setting, plus the courageous teachers and administrators who lost their lives while performing their duties, we are very fortunate to have Dr. LaFayette agree to offer his training to the Macon County School System.

Dr. Jacqueline Brooks, Superintendent, is hoping each school can send two or more persons.  Parents, representatives from the PTA, SGA Presidents and Officers, elected officials, and members of the law enforcement community are invited to attend.

The training will take place at the Transportation Building Conference Room (diagonally across the street from Booker T. Washington High School), on 12/18/2012, at 9:00 AM.

Decorating for the Holidays

December 06, 2012

The elementary teachers of Notasulga High School decided to  use this year's school theme H.A.T.S. (Helping All To Succeed) as a catalyst to spread Christmas Cheer.  This was the brainchild of Ms. Angel Duplessis, ACCESS Lab Facilitator.  Way to go Ms. Angel!  Happy Holidays!

Charity has Abounded this Holiday Season

December 04, 2012

GAP, inc. donated much needed school uniforms to the elementary and junior high at Notasulga School. In addition, they donated school supplies (book bags, pencils, paper, etc.) to all students who had a need. We appreciate GAP’s charity and we will not take their concern for granted. To display our appreciation, our school held a special assembly that praised the generosity of GAP; the representatives were moved by the gesture.

Prior to the Thanksgiving holidays, the NHS Blue Devils showed their pride and love for giving by collecting canned goods to donate to needy families. A local Notasulga church group collected the food and distributed it back into the community. The town is fortunate to have loving donors and charitable neighbors.

In addition, First Realty of Auburn, Alabama, sponsored the teacher’s of NHS with a Thanksgiving meal, so that they would know that their dedication and hard work has not gone unnoticed. The meal was spectacular! It was a blessing to know that other people appreciate and respect the teaching profession. All faculty and staff were truly humbled by the gesture.

"And that power can be deployed to include or isolate, to empower or extort."  The previous quote is from the Microcredit Summit Campaign's website.

Microcredit is the extension of small loans and other financial services (such as savings accounts) to the very poor. This allows them to pursue entrepreneurial projects that generate extra income, thus helping them to better provide for themselves and their families.

Professor Muhammad Yunus, a Bangladeshi banker, economist and Professor of Economics conceived the concept of Microcredit, for which he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006.

Dr Yunus will address our high school students as well as any and all interested persons on January 18th, 2013 at 12:00PM at the Kellogg Conference Center on Tuskegee's campus.

Make a note on your calendar to be in attendance for this dynamic and innovative session.

Holiday Sharing Program

November 28, 2012

"Tis the season to be sharing", and our first annual Holiday sharing program.  In collaboration with various community groups, Macon County Schools will be accepting donations of paper goods, food stuffs, gently-used and new clothing items and cleaning products (both personal items like soap and toothpaste and cleaning products like dishwashing liquids).

The Holiday Season is most difficult on the most needy, so please, open your hearts to those of us all around us, who, though they are not crying out, are still in great pain.  Share your Blessings!

American Education Week

November 15, 2012

On Thursday, November 15, 2012 Notasulga High School celebrated American Education Week with a student led and oriented assembly.  Students from Kindergarten through 12th grades showcased their abilities by presenting the Pledge of Allegiance, Rapping and Singing just to name a few.  Not only did the students of NHS do an outstanding job but they were afforded the opportunity to have The Honorable Omar Neal Mayor of Tuskegee 2008-2012 as the guest speaker.

Mayor Neal mesmerized and captivated his audience by opening up an alliteration and rhyme about the concept of time.  He used the analogy of an Eagle and a Chicken as his topic of discussion.  “There once was an Eagle who was raised on a chicken farm as a chicken,” he began.  “The Eagle would see the other eagles and birds flying through the air and wished he could fly.”  Mayor Neal continued to say, “The eagle never recognized his own ability to fly, because he never believed that the wings he was given would allow him [the eagle] to soar through the wild blue yonder.  When there is danger near or obstacles in an Eagles’ path, instead of going around it Eagles rise above it.”  Mayor Neal went on to say that he was very impressed at the level of respect the student body has for authority and how attentive and engaging everyone appeared.  ‘There is something special here at Notasulga, you can feel it once you arrive on the schools’ ground.’  These epithets echoed the very sentiments of what American Education week is all about.

America’s children are the legacy of our Nation. It is a known fact that this legacy can only be fulfilled through quality education.  Today, America remains strong because of its educational values.  That is why “Great Public Schools: A Basic Right and Our Responsibility,” is more than just a tagline. This reflection calls to provide students with quality public schools so that they can grow, prosper, and achieve in the 21st century.

Success!
