E-Verify provides an automated link to federal databases to help employers to immediately confirm the employment authorization of new hires. E-Verify works by electronically comparing the information on an employee’s Form I-9 with Social Security Administration, Department of Homeland Security, and  State Departments records to verify the identity and employment eligibility of each newly hired employee and/or employee assigned to a covered federal contract.Federal law requires all employers to verify the identity and employment eligibility of all persons hired to work in the United States. Since verification of the employment authorization and identity of new hires became law in 1986, Form I-9 has been the foundation of the verification process. To improve the accuracy and integrity of this process the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services operates an electronic employment verification system called E-Verify.
