 Certification Add-on Approach

The Add-on Approach is Great News!

Teachers now have an opportunity to add on certifications to existing certifications. For example, a teacher holding a valid Alabama Professional Educator Certificate in Physical Education can now add on Health or a teacher holding a valid Alabama Professional Educator Certificate in Early Childhood can now add on Elementary Education.

General Information:

  • An individual who holds valid Alabama Professional Educator Certificate in a teaching field may add selected fields to their existing certificate through this approach.
  • The certificate issued through this approach will be a bachelor’s degree level certificate.
  • If certification in a core academic subject area is issued through this approach, highly qualified status in the area at the grade level of that certification will also be issued.
  • Two full scholastic years of full-time, classroom teaching experience in a P-12 setting is required.  Partial years cannot be combined to meet this requirement.
